Negative Effects of Technology

Ansa Thomas, Editor-in-Cheif

The first iPhone (1st Gen) was released in 2007. At the time, we were unaware of the negative effects that it would hold on society. Now in 2023, we have valuable information.

The Social Dilemma is an American docudrama that was released in 2020. This film brings in multiple people who used to work for big social media companies. Many were co-founders of companies like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.…

This docudrama reveals the darkness and control these companies have over society. Every day, we willingly give up our information. Social media is convenient and useful to us; however, it is alarming how much information they have on us.

Have you ever talked about how much you want something with friends or family, and then the next time you get on your phone or computer, there are a million ads about the very thing? It’s not a coincidence; if that does not scare you, then that is a problem.

I enjoy TikTok as much as the next person; nevertheless, when you agree to the terms and conditions, you give them access to anything on your phone or a device that your phone can connect to. These companies have us wrapped around their fingers.

Mental health is one of the main side effects of technology. One of the themes in The Social Dilemma is that we need affirmation when we use social media. The like button was created to be amusing and lighthearted, but for some people, who get dependent on the dopamine rush it produces, it has taken on a domineering role.

The expectation of texts, snaps, emails, calls, etc., is known as “Chronic Smartphone Stress.”

In addition, I have observed people who hold their identity in technology. For example, I once knew someone who deleted their posts if they did not achieve a certain number of likes. People have put their whole identity into receiving affirmation from an insignificant heart button or comment.

“About 3,000 people die in crashes involving a distracted driver every year,” according to the CDC. It is ridiculous that around 3,000 people die yearly because you are checking Instagram or texting your friend. Just think, if you put down your phone for 30 minutes while driving, you could save a life.

Patience is a virtue; if you practice that, you can save a life.

I barely touched on all the negative effects of technology, but please read the links I have attached or watch The Social Dilemma. Technology is only going to become more advanced, and while that sounds like a good thing, it will be the downfall of humankind.
